Thanksgiving Activities & Freebies

As November is quickly running by, I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that you’re hanging on for dear life until that blessed Thanksgiving Break comes! If not, and you’re rocking the year, good for you! However, if you need a little extra push to make it to the break, I’ve got you covered with some fun Thanksgiving activities and freebies!
Thanksgiving Scoot
If you haven’t played a scoot game with your class yet, what are you waiting for?! It is such a great way to get your students up and moving around while learning and having a GREAT time. I always enjoyed playing scoot games with my students because they LOVED it so much.
What is scoot you ask?
It’s really simple to play. Just put a task card of any kind on each desk in your classroom, or place the task cards anywhere around the room. If it’s your first time, stick to desks to keep it slightly more organized.
Students get a certain amount of time to complete the task card at their desk. To indicate when their time is up, you can either yell “scoot!” or you can play music and stop it after a certain amount of time.
Once their time is up, they must stop their current task and move on to the next desk to complete that task card. Students continue to go around the room until they’ve completed all of the task cards.
This can be used as a great review game or to practice specific skills.
I’ve created a SILLY Thanksgiving Scoot game that teachers and students have raved about. It’s a really great game to play the day before the break when students already have so much extra energy and excitement is in the air! Click on the photo to see the 30 task cards included.
Thanksgiving Book Challenge
Students love a good challenge right?! Challenge them to read one book a day until the break. It doesn’t have to be a big book because picture books are not always easy books, right?! For some this will be easy, but for others it’ll truly be a challenge that helps them grow and increase their fluency and confidence!
You can incentivize the class with a fun party for those who complete the challenge, a treat, or anything you’d like to reward them with.
I’ve put together a Thanksgiving book challenge tracking sheet, just for you, which includes Thanksgiving bookmarks as rewards along the way to keep students motivated.

Thanksgiving Book Reader’s Theater
Reader’s theaters are an amazing way to build skills like fluency, confidence, prosody, etc.
A GREAT way to to do this is to put your class in groups of 4-6 and have them choose a fun Thanksgiving read-aloud to turn into a reader’s theater and perform it for the rest of the class!
This could be an activity that takes up the whole month of November (15 mins here and there) or one day depending on how much time you’re willing to devote to it and how creative you want to let your students get. They can create props and really let their creative minds work!
I hope these Thanksgiving activities and freebies help you have a wonderful time with your students this November! What activities do you love to do with your class in November? Share with me below!
