1. Embrace Neutral Accents
Nothing says “versatile” and “timeless” quite like neutrals! When it comes to selecting accent items for your classroom, opt for neutral colors that can seamlessly blend with a variety of color schemes. For example, choose curtains in shades of beige, gray, or white that can complement different themes and aesthetics. These neutral tones create a calming backdrop while allowing you to switch up your classroom’s color palette without having to replace major decor elements year after year.
This strategy extends to furniture and area rugs too! Natural wood furniture pieces are timeless and blend with any color scheme. Remember to choose upholstery and rugs that are also neutral, so they don’t clash with future color schemes you may switch to.
2. Functional and Aesthetic Organizing Tools
We know that teachers invest much of their own money into organizing tools for their classrooms. Such as book bins, rolling carts, toolboxes, organizing drawers, and more. And you don’t want to have to replace these items each time your classroom theme changes! So, opt for black or white bins that not only keep your supplies in order, but also add a touch of sophistication to the space. These neutral colors can match any classroom theme or design, making it easier to update your decor without the need for new storage solutions.
When I purchased my first teacher toolbox, I spray painted it a light teal color that I loved. It turned out that I was able to keep that teal color for many years even with a variety of different classroom decor themes. But eventually I opted to repaint it white. And I haven’t had to paint it again since! The white goes with everything, and I like the look of my spray painted toolbox so much more than it looked when I first bought it.
I made a similar choice for my 12-drawer rolling cart. It came with a silver metal frame, which I spray painted white. And I think that simple change made a huge difference aesthetically!
3. Neutral Bulletin Board Borders and Backgrounds
Bulletin boards are the perfect canvas for showcasing student work and adding visual interest to your classroom. You can highlight your creativity through your displays as well! And a great way to do this is by swapping out your bulletin board decor throughout the year, either with the changing seasons and holidays, or just for fun! So, choosing neutral bulletin board backgrounds and borders is a smart choice. Save yourself time and money by not having to change your background paper and borders each time you want to change up your display!
The vast majority of the borders I use are black and white because they go with everything. Choosing neutral colored borders provides a classic and elegant frame for your displays. And this simple color palette allows you to get creative with your bulletin board designs without having to worry about clashing colors. Plus, black and white accents can effortlessly tie in with other elements in the room. These are my favorite neutral bulletin board borders and backgrounds!
4. Thrifty Shopping Ideas
Search local thrift stores, garage sales, and online marketplaces for budget-friendly classroom decor items. Keep an eye out for gently used furniture, decorative pieces, lamps, rugs, and supplies than can be repurposed. Dollar stores can also be a treasure trove of affordable items like wall decals, accents, and organizational tools. Additionally, take advantage of back-to-school sales and clearance events to score great deals on essential items. Amazon Prime Days are also a great time to find organizing tools, like rolling carts and toolboxes, at deep discounts!
